Viber Arrives On The Desktop

Viber is a service that lets you call, text, and send photos for free worldwide.  Viber’s calls are in HD quality and often sound better than regular carrier networks.  Viber has over 200 million users that access their contacts through mobile devices.  Now the company has launched on the desktop.  Coinciding with the desktop launch, Viber also launched an update to their iOS, Android, and BlackBerry apps to version 3.0.

Viber Desktop plays nicely with the mobile version of the software.  You can use your existing phone number as your ID for the desktop version of the app.  “People spend a substantial amount of time on their smartphones,” said Viber CEO Talmon Marco. “However, a lot of that usage takes place at home or in the office, where they have laptops or desktops close by. With Viber Desktop you always get to use the most convenient device. You can seamlessly switch devices while messaging and even transfer calls between your mobile and desktop.”

Viber competes with services like Skype, but they have one-tap call transfer between their mobile app and desktop as a distinguishing feature.  Messages that are received and sent are shown on all of the devices, but a push notification will only appear on the device that is being used.  Messages that are deleted from one device will be reflected on all of the devices.  “On top of this, Viber Desktop is Viber’s first application to offer video calls,” said the company in a news release. “With this new beta feature, users can now make desktop-to-desktop video calls to other Viber users.”

Through the Viber 3.0 release, mobile users of the app will see that the app has new video message capabilities, last-online status, new stickers, a new photo experience, a new voice engine, and performance improvements.  Viber is now compatible with 8 new languages including Dutch, Korean, Turkish, and Swedish.  The Android update includes a security fix that patches a recent exploit that let hackers access phones.
