Path Makes A Deal With Sprint

Path is a mobile social networking-enabled photo sharing and messaging service that launched in November 2010.  Path has announced that they have made a partnership with Sprint that will let Sprint customers download the application to their phone without having to find it in the Google Play application store.  This will be applied to the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, and Kyocera Torque smartphones distributed by Sprint.

“Today, we’re excited to announce that we’re starting something new with Sprint to make finding Path easy. Sprint has brought together a group of some of the highest quality apps around for its Discover-it Widget on the new Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One and Torque devices, and we’re delighted to be included. Now, millions of Sprint customers can download Path with just a quick tap, allowing them to easily connect and share with the ones they love,” said Path on the company blog.

Path recently hit 10 million users, but the company was caught spamming address books with unwanted text messages and phone calls.  Stephen Kenwright, a digital marketer, found out that Path had texted and “robocalled” some of the people in his contact lists.  This happened after he installed the app, tested it, and then uninstalled it.  While Kenwright was at work the next day, he found out that Path got in touch with everyone in his phone book.  This means that Path grabbed his contacts in the 30 minutes that he had the app built into his phone.

Path CEO and founder Dave Morin denied any wrongdoing.  He said that “Invites on Path are never sent without a user’s consent — any allegations to the contrary are false.”  Path does have a feature that encourages new users to promote the application on social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Twitter, and Tumblr.  Path also lets users opt-in to scan address books, Gmail, and Twitter accounts to invite their friends.  Facebook blocked Path from accessing their API to invite friends after the controversy took place.

Sprint will help Path continue their growth as they have 55.2 million subscribers.  The financial terms about the Path-Sprint deal was undisclosed.
