Salesforce.com Acquires Pinterest-Like Website Clipboard
Salesforce.com has acquired Clipboard, a website that is similar to Pinterest. Clipboard’s founders said that they will be shutting down the website on June 30th. Existing users will be able to download their data into a personal archive that lets you view your clips and boards offline.
“We have some bittersweet news. We are extremely happy to announce that salesforce.com has signed an agreement to acquire Clipboard, allowing us to pursue our mission of saving and sharing the Web on a much larger scale. But at the same time we’re also sad to see this stage of our adventure come to an end, especially since it means that our relationship with you, our users, will irreversibly change,” said the Clipboard team on their website.
Based in Bellevue, Washington, Clipboard launched in 2011. The service went public around one year ago. Clipboard allowed users to bookmark text, audio, animations, and formatted sections of websites. Users could make their “clipboards” public and private. There was also a similar following and follower model that is used on Pinterest.
Clipboard CEO Dr. Gary Flake will become a Salesforce.com’s engineering VP at the company’s Seattle office. All the rest of Clipboard’s core engineering and design team will work at Salesforce.com, reporting to Dr. Flake.
The acquisition details are unknown, but there are rumors that the deal was worth around $10 – $20 million. Clipboard raised around $2.5 million in seed funding from Andreessen Horowitz, Index Ventures, CrunchFund, SV Angel, betaworks, First Round Capital, DFJ, and several other investors.
