Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (005930) To Launch 5G In 2020 With 1Gbps Speeds
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (KRX:005930) has successfully started developing 5G network technology. The technology is expected to be rolled out in the year 2020, according to Yonhap News. Samsung said that the new wireless technology will make it possible for customers to access a stream of data faster than the current fourth-generation networks and download an entire movie in under a second.
Users will be able to download and upload at speeds that are up to tens of gigabits per second (Gbps). Currently the speeds are at about 75 megabits per second (Mbps) under the fourth-generation long-term evolution (LTE) service. Samsung tested the speeds using the 28 Gigahertz (GHz) waveband for transmitting data at a speed of around 1Gbps. Samsung used around 64 antenna elements to make it possible for their test device to exchange real-time signals. Samsung’s findings will be vital for the global development of 5G networks and in developing an international standard.
Samsung is not the only company that is focused on 5G development. This past October, the University of Surrey raised around £35 million to build a 5G research center as a joint funded project between the British government’s UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF) and key international mobile operators around the world including Huawei, Samsung, Telefonica Europe, Fujitsu, Aircom International, and Rohde & Schwarz. This article was written by Amit Chowdhry.
