Cloudant Raises $12 Million In Series B

Cloudant has raised $12 million in Series B funding from Devonshire Investors, Rackspace Hosting, and Toba Capital.  Cloudant is a distributed database-as-a-service (DBaaS) that allows developers of fast growing web and mobile apps to focus on building and improving products rather than worrying about scaling and managing databases of their own.

Cloudant plans to use the funding to add staff and infrastructure partners.

“First, we need to invest in operational expertise around the world — we’re building an office in San Francisco, we’re based in Boston, and now we have presence in the U.K. and will open one in Hong Kong probably in the next 120 days — we need to staff that,” stated Cloudant CEO Derek Schoettle in an interview with GigaOM.

Cloudant’s NoSQL database service is used on Rackspace, Joyent, Microsoft Azure, and Softlayer.  Cloudant currently has about 60 employees and they plan to hit around 100 within the next year.

Cloudant has raised a total of $16 million thus far from investors such as Avalon Ventures, Samsung Venture Investment, and In-Q-Tel.  These investors also participated in this round.
