Comcast To Create Millions Of Xfinitywifi Access Points
Comcast Corporation has announced today that they are planning to create millions of WiFi access points for customers through a neighborhood hotspot initiative. Comcast is going to offer their Xfinity Internet customers with an additional “Xfinitywifi” signal (SSID) in their home that is completely separate from their private and secure home WiFi signal. The Xfinitywifi signal will be available at no additional cost to Xfinity Internet residential customers.
The additional WiFi hotspots will allow friends, family members, and visitors with easy access to reliable WiFi. “WiFi is at the center of our strategy to offer our customers the best online experience, whether it’s the fastest WiFi experience in the home, or a fast and reliable WiFi environment outside the home,” stated Comcast Cable’s Senior Vice President of Business Development Tom Nagel. “WiFi is an important part of our strategy to be the place where customers connect all devices, anywhere and at any time.”
The new Wireless Gateway will broadcast two WiFi signals. The default signal will be securely configured for the private use of the home subscriber. The second Xfinitywifi will be for guests. Comcast initially tested this service around Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Northern Virginia, and Washington D.C. There are currently over 100,000 Xfinity Internet subscribers that are using these WiFi access points.
