Who Is Edward Snowden?
Over this past week, The Guardian reported details that the National Security Agency (NSA) was monitoring phone calls taking place between phone numbers and other meta data. Google and Facebook both quickly denied that they were participating with the NSA to track users. The whistleblower of this case is a 29-year-old Booz Allen Hamilton employee that has been working at the National Security Agency for four years.
Snowden copied the last set of documents that he intended to leak three weeks ago at his office in Hawaii. Snowden requested a two-week leave of absence shortly after copying the files. Snowden told his girlfriend that he had to leave and then he flew to Hong Kong “because he believed that it was one of the few places in the world that both could and would resist the dictates of the US government.”
Snowden used to work at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) after he was discharged from the U.S. Army. Snowden has been hiding in a Hong Kong hotel for around three weeks now and he seems to have accepted that the consequences could be dire.
“I understand that I will be made to suffer for my actions,” he wrote in a note published by the newspaper. “I will be satisfied if the federation of secret law, unequal pardon and irresistible executive powers that rule the world that I love are revealed even for an instant,” said Snowden in an interview with The Guardian.
Snowden said that many of his family members worked for the U.S. government. “The only thing I fear is the harmful effects on my family, who I won’t be able to help any more. That’s what keeps me up at night,” added Snowden.
Snowden said that he was motivated to show the leaked documents as part of his desire to show how the government abuses their power. He said that there is no “public overnight.”
