CenturyLink is a high speed Internet, phone, and TV services provider that has acquired the Portland, Oregon based platform-as-a-service startup AppFog through their subsidiary Savvis.  CenturyLink acquired Savvis for $2.5 billion around two years ago as part of a plan to build a cloud service.

AppFog started in 2010 and they raised around $10 million in total funding.  Some of AppFog’s investors included Ignition Partners, Madrona Venture Group, First Round Capital and Founders Co-Op.

AppFog lets users easily create websites and set up online management tools for software developers.  Portland based boutique investment bank MergerTech represented AppFog in the deal.  AppFog founder and CEO Lucas Carlson is joining Savvis as the VP and “cloud evangelist.”

AppFog has a dozen or so employees in Portland and Savvis will retain the office and staff there.  “They’re doubling down on Portland. They’re investing. We’re hiring,” stated Carlson in an interview with OregonLive. “My role gets to have influence over a wide variety of CenturyLink, Savvis and AppFog businesses.”
