Ford’s New Electronic Brake Light Technology Will Warn Drivers If A Car Is Braking

Ford Electronic Brake Light
Ford Motor Company’s research and development is currently testing out an Electronic Brake Light feature.  The Electronic Brake Light gives an early warning through car-to-car communication.  This feature alerts other drivers behind you to vehicles that are braking ahead of you.  The technology is still being tested and has a long way to go until it gets implemented in all of their vehicles.  The Electronic Brake Light transmits a wireless signal to illuminate a dashboard light on vehicles that are following them.

“Car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communications represent one of the next major advancements in vehicle safety,” stated Ford chief technical officer and VP of Ford Research Paul Mascarenas.  “Ford is committed to further real-world testing here and around the world with the goal of implementation in the foreseeable future.”

The Electronic Brake Light is one of about 20 systems that Ford tested for their Safe Intelligent Mobility-Testfield Germany (simTD).  Ford tested the Electronic Brake Light system on 20 S-Max vehicles in Frankfurt, Germany.  Essentially the Electronic Brake Light is another form of a brake light, but it is a higher tech way of avoiding a fender bender.  simTD is also responsible for the Obstacle Warning systems that alerts drivers about objects on the road as well.
