PayPal, the popular web and mobile payments company owned by eBay, has announced a new service called PayPal Galactic.  PayPal’s announcement featured the astronaut Buzz Aldrin.  PayPal co-founder Elon Musk also runs a space transportation company called SpaceX.

“We want to make sure that PayPal is the preferred way to pay from space and in space,” stated PayPal president David Marcus.  Once the connectivity and security issues in outer space is solved, they want to be the first.

PayPal is in talks with the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute and former SETI director Jill Tarter for PayPal Galactic.  Tarter said that it is important for Tarter to facilitate commerce in order to set up a functional society outside of the planet.

There is already a need for a payments system in outer space because astronauts want to buy music and e-books.
