Ouya To Match Kickstarter Funds For Console Developers

Ouya is going to start matching some of the Kickstarter funds raised by games designed for their Android powered console.  Ouya is calling this developer-focused fund the “Free the Games Fund.”  Ouya is going to distribute $1 million to eligible Ouya game projects that launches on Kickstarter between August 9, 2013 and August 10, 2014.

The Ouya projects can ask for any amount they want on Kickstarter.  If these companies hit their Kickstarter goals and raise at least $50,000, Ouya will match every dollar beyond that amount, up to $250,000 according to AllThingsD.

The only games that are eligible for the matching fund have to be exclusive to Ouya for at least 6 months after launching.  Ouya will also offer a $100,000 bonus for eligible games that can raise the most money.

Reviews of the Ouya have been great, but the game library is one of the most criticized aspects of the console.  Kickstarter is not directly involved with the “Free the Games Fund.”  Ouya’s team believes that this is a way to give back to the Kickstarter community.  Kickstarter is responsible for Ouya’s initial $8.6 million in funding that was donated in the form of crowdfunding.

“We wanted to support the company that helped us begin this entire revolution, which is Kickstarter,” stated Ouya chief executive officer Julie Uhrman.

Around 12 Ouya games have been funded on Kickstarter thus far.  These games include Another Castle and Whispering Willows.
