Around 250 employees at BlackBerry have been laid off in Waterloo, Ontario.  Employees were given their notices on Tuesday.  The employees that were laid off worked at the new product testing facility that supported manufacturing and R&D.  These changes will reportedly help the company “increase efficiency” and scale the company “correctly” for new opportunities, indicating that BlackBerry may consider offering their operating system to other manufacturing companies.

Last year BlackBerry laid off around 5,000 employees as part of restructuring efforts.

“I can confirm on the record, that BlackBerry on Tuesday informed 250 employees of their termination in Waterloo. These employees were part of the New Product Testing Facility, a department that supports BlackBerry’s manufacturing and R&D efforts,” said BlackBerry spokesperson Lisette Kwong.  “This is part of the next stage of our turnaround plan to increase efficiencies and scale our company correctly for new opportunities in mobile computing. We will be as transparent as possible as those plans evolve.”
