Yahoo! Shuts Down E-Mail Service In China
Yahoo! has decided to shut down their e-mail service in China, according to the log-in page for the service. Yahoo! is asking users to transfer their accounts to Alibaba’s Alimail. Yahoo! originally announced that they were closing the service back in April.
The Yahoo! China e-mail website says that users that have the @yahoo.com.cn and @yahoo.cn can register and transfer their data to a new Alimail account. They will continue to receive e-mails sent to their Yahoo! addresses until December 31, 2014.
Yahoo! spent $1 billion for a 40% stake in Alibaba in 2005. Alibaba repurchased a large number of shares back from Yahoo! for $7.6 billion. Yahoo! still has a 24% stake in Alibaba. Alibaba is expected to go public within the next few years.
