Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is planning to invest around $250 million into a new data center in Finland.  This is the second major international data center in the country.  Google is building a data center from a repurposed wood pulp plant in Finland.

The new data center will decrease Microsoft’s latency and expand service capabilities for their European customers.  Microsoft’s modular datacenter architecture works well with the climate in Finland.

By building a data center in Finland, Microsoft will be able to add sub-regions for the European Azure deployment.  The $250 million that Microsoft is spending on the data center is in addition to the Dublin facility.

Microsoft also has plans to build new data centers in Australia, which will include support for new Azure sub-regions and a major region for all of Australia.
