Nokia Was Building Android Devices Before Microsoft Bought Them

Earlier this month, Microsoft Corporation announced that they were buying Nokia’s device business for $7.2 billion.  What we know now is that Nokia was preparing to launch an Android-based device under the Lumia branding.

According to The New York Times, Nokia set up a team that had Android running on Lumia handsets for a while before Microsoft and Nokia signed an acquisition deal.  The Android project was confidential, but Microsoft was aware of the project at Nokia.

It is unknown whether Nokia was going to push forward in releasing the Android-based Nokia Lumia phones commercially.  Nokia’s Windows Phone Lumia handsets has been selling in fractions compared to other Android manufacturers.  This is why it is not surprising that Nokia was mulling Android opportunities.
