Mercedes-Benz: Self-Driving Cars Due In 2020
Mercedes-Benz has plans to push for driverless cars in 2020. Those vehicles will be “self-piloting.” At this past week’s Frankfurt auto show, Mercedes-Benz showed the S500 test. The system is currently known as “Intelligent Drive.”
The test took place in August on a 100km route from Mannheim to Pforzheim in Germany:
Daimler said that the modified S-Class is “near-production,” but the largest obstacle in bringing it to the market is regulations against self-driving cars in the world.
The vehicle is able to drive itself using a color camera mounted behind the windshield. The camera can read stoplights and it uses long-range radars to detect oncoming vehicles along with a stereo camera that works just like human eyes for detecting distant objects.
Daimler said that they were working on this technology for the past 30 years, which is well before Google existing. Google has also been testing driverless cars.
