Nest Protect Is A High-Tech Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector

Nest Protect - Night
From the same people that brought you the Nest learning thermostat comes a new, high-tech smoke and carbon monoxide detector.  Nest Protect has a human voice, which can be set to English, Spanish, or French.  The voice tells you if the battery is low.  If carbon monoxide is detected, it will produce a loud alarm noise.

Nest said that they decided to use a human voice because children often sleep through alarm noises, but wake up to human voices.  When you turn off the light, there is a green light that indicates that the device is still working.  If you walk under the the Nest Protect, it detects your movement and lights up.  If the alarm is overreacting, you just have to wave your arms at the device.

Nest also built smartphone and tablet apps for Nest Protect.  The apps were rewritten so that it also works with the Nest Learning Thermostat.  You can use the apps to monitor multiple Protect detectors.

The app gives you a way to monitor your home even while you are out on vacation.  Nest plans on using the sensors built into the Protect to create more services.

The sensors built into the Nest Protect include a photoelectric smoke sensor, a heat sensor, a light sensor, a CO sensor, ultrasonic sensors, and activity sensors.  Next year, the Nest Protect will work with wired security systems.  Nest Labs CEO Tony Fadell has been credited as being the “father of the iPod.”
