“Rockstar” Uses Nortel’s Patents To Sue Google And Samsung

“Rockstar” is a consortium of companies such as Apple, BlackBerry, Sony, Ericsson, and Microsoft that bought thousands of patents that were owned by Nortel for $4.5 billion.  Google attempted to purchase those patents, but their deal fell through.  This is one of the major reasons why Google bought Motorola Mobility for $12 billion.

Google’s acquisition of Motorola was cleared after they agreed to license the patents on “fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms.”  Rockstar and another company called Netstar filed the lawsuit against Google over 7 different patents, which covers the ability to match Internet search terms to advertising.

Lawsuits were also filed against other Android manufacturing companies like LG, Samsung, Pantech, ZTE, ASUS, and Huawei.  Usually when an action takes place, there is retaliation in the form of counter-lawsuits like we have seen between Samsung and Apple.  Stay tuned to Pulse 2.0 to learn more about this lawsuit.
