Report: Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA) Is Considering Arizona For Battery Plant
Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is strongly considering the building of a new battery factory in North America to make cells for their electric vehicles like the Model S and the upcoming Model X. According to BizJournals, Chandler, Arizona may be the future site for the battery plant. Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk said that the factory would like be solar-powered.
Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) builds their electric cars in Fremont, California. The new battery plant could be built in a former Motorola facility in Chandler. There is also a lot of potential battery office space in the Valley area of Chandler that ranges from Goodyear to the Mesa Gateway Airport region.
Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is not the only Silicon Valley based tech company that would have a manufacturing facility in the area. Apple announced earlier this week that they were going to set up a 700-worker manufacturing plant at the former GM Proving Ground development in Mesa, Arizona. Apple acquired First Solar’s Mesa facility for $113.6 million and is going to set up a factory there. The Apple facility is going to be powered by a solar farm and it will develop the project with the Salt River Project.
Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) already has a presence in Arizona. The company has a dealership location inside the Scottsdale Fashion Square.
Arizona is not the only potential area for a future Tesla battery factory. There are also empty plants in Michigan, Georgia, Missouri, and New York.
