‘Selfie’ Is The 2013 Word Of The Year By Oxford English Dictionaries

Selfie
The Oxford English Dictionaries has announced that “Selfie” has been named as the official word of the year for 2013.  Oxford Dictionaries defines selfie as:

a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website:

occasional selfies are acceptable, but posting a new picture of yourself every day isn’t necessary

The word Selfie was added to Oxford in August.  Oxford said that “If it is good enough for the Obamas or the pope, then it is good enough for Word of the Year.”

The word “selfie” has been around since about 2002.  The term was popularized on MySpace and Flickr, but it became mainstream in 2012.  Usage of the word increased five-fold between March and August.
