Coursera is an online education startup that has raised $20 million in funding, which means that their Series B round is now up to $63 million.  Founded by Stanford professors Daphne Koller and Andrew Ng, Coursera offers video lectures on various academic topics.  Some of the teachers that are on Coursera are at Harvard, Stanford, and MIT.

Coursera is partnered with 100 universities in 19 countries.  They currently have 700 professors and 5.5 million students on their platform.

Considered a massive open online course (MOOC) provider, Coursera is a great option for receiving an education that costs less than going to physical classrooms. It is a way for students that cannot afford college that could receive additional job skills.

Coursera recently launched a “Learning Hubs” initiative so that students can work together in physical spaces around the world.  The additional funding was provided by three partner universities that are currently unknown.  GSV Capital and Learn Capital also participated in this round.
