New York State Troopers To Get SUVs So They Can Go After Texting Drivers

New York State Troopers are going to start driving around tall and unmarked SUVs to bust drivers that are illegally texting and driving.  The police has deployed 32 SUVs to go after the drivers.  The state of New York has banned drivers from touching their devices while driving so they set up “Texting Zones” on the side of highways.

The fine for texting-and-driving is $200 and five penalty points can be added to their record.  The New York State troopers have cited a study that says that the chance of an accident is increased 23 times if a driver takes their eyes off the road for over 5 seconds.

In the two months since the New York State troopers tested out the program, they have issued over 5,000 tickets.
