Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA) reportedly to unveil ‘Model E’ at 2015 Detroit Auto Show
Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is reportedly going to unveil the new all-electric budget model car at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, which generally happens in January of every year.
Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) chief designer Franz von Holzhauzen spoke with Autobild about the budget version of the Tesla vehicle. “Model E” is just a code name for the vehicle as of right now, but is not official. Tesla’s flagship sedan vehicle on the market today is the Model S. In 2014, Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is expected to be releasing an SUV crossover called the Model X.
The Model E is rumored to have a price tag of $30,000 with a tax credit whereas the current Model S sedan has a starting price of $69,900. The Model E will have around a 200 mile battery range.
Holzhauzen pointed out that the Model E could have the same size as Model S, yet still have a very distinct design.
After the Model E is released in 2015, Elon Musk even hinted at the possibility of an all-electric pick-up truck.
The Model S has been very successful for Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA), but the company hit a few hardships as of late. There were around three accidents involving a fire towards the last quarter of this year leading to an NHTSA investigation. In these three cases, all of the passengers survived. The Model S vehicle warns the drivers to pull over if the hood of the vehicle becomes enflamed. In one of the accidents, one of the drivers was supposedly driving reckless at high speeds.
