Target decides not to sell ‘Beyoncé’ because of iTunes launch
Target has decided not to sell Beyoncé’s new album because she launched it on iTunes first. Target said that they are not selling Beyoncé’s album because it went on iTunes first before putting the CD on retail store shelves.
“At Target we focus on offering our guests a wide assortment of physical CDs, and when a new album is available digitally before it is available physically, it impacts demand and sales projections,” stated a Target spokesperson in an interview with Billboard.
The album is going to have a wide release at retail stores by Friday, December 20th, which is one week after launch on iTunes. The album has been a major hit online so far.
“While there are many aspects that contribute to our approach and we have appreciated partnering with Beyoncé in the past, we are primarily focused on offering CDs that will be available in a physical format at the same time as all other formats,” added the Target spokesperson. “At this time, Target will not be carrying Beyoncé’s new self-titled album Beyoncé.”
Target used to have strong ties with Beyoncé. Her previous studio album called 4 was a Target exclusive with six extra tracks.
