Tesla Model S maintains 5-star safety rating despite fire probe
Earlier this week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reaffirmed the 5-star safety rating of the Tesla Model S electric vehicle for the 2014 model year. This is positive news for Tesla Motors because they dealt with negative publicity over three fires involved with the Model S vehicle in the span of around 5 weeks.
Tesla Motors said that they are “awaiting feedback from NHTSA regarding their investigation of recent fire incidents”
The three fires took place in Washington, Tennessee, and Mexico. The two fires in the U.S. involved metal objects that punctured the lithium-ion battery packs. The fire in Mexico involved a high-speed crash. All of the drivers were uninjured in the fires.
The five-star rating is the highest rating that a vehicle can achieve for safety.
