Microsoft applied for the ‘Mod’ trademark
On December 9th, Microsoft applied for the “Mod” trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. There is speculation that this could be the name for the user interface that is used in Windows 8 and Windows Phone. The user interface used to be known as Metro.
Before launching Windows 8 in August 2012, the name “Metro” was phased out. The user interface is a tiled interface.
Microsoft also applied for trademarks like “Windows Mod,” “Office Mod,” and “Microsoft Office Mod.” It is unknown whether Microsoft will commercially use the trademark name or not.
