HealthCare.gov website hits over 1.1 million enrollments

The “Obamacare” website, known as HealthCare.gov, has hit over 1.1 million enrollments following a surge in December, according to White House officials. The White House had a goal of hitting around 3.3 million by December 31st and over 1 million people signed up in December alone.
The surge in enrollment was largely due to the fixes in the glitches that plagued the website. Only 27,000 people signed up for the website in October and 137,000 signed up in November. The White House has a goal of enrolling 7 million people by March 31st.

The HealthCare.gov website currently serves 36 states. The numbers from 14 states running their own healthcare websites still have to report their December stats. One of the highest priorities is to prevent gaps in coverage for at least 4.7 million Americans who saw their individual policies cancelled this fall because they fell short of law requirements. Even if these individuals don’t sign up for new plans, they will not face the law’s tax penalty for being uninsured.
