Zola Books is an e-book social network and retailer that has acquired Bookish, a website where readers can read book recommendations. Zola Books is gaining ownership of book recommendation technology through the acquisition. Bookish uses proprietary algorithms to match content and readers.

“Zola and Bookish share a vision of a richer reader experience, connecting readers to their favorite books, authors, tastemakers they trust, and of course to other readers,” stated Zola Books CEO Joe Regal. “Ebooks are becoming personal social networks. Not only can we can read them on phones and devices that we carry with us, but we can also share and comment right inside the reading apps themselves.”

Zola Books will enhance Bookish as part of the acquisition. Hundreds of thousands of people visit Bookish per month. Zola Books is going to find ways to develop new ways to provide readers with access to the recommendation engine by letting other sites and services access their recommendation engine through their API. Bookish was founded by Hachette Book Group, Penguin Group, and Simon & Schuster in February 2013.
