Kanye West inspired digital currency Coinye pushes forward despite C&D
Last week, we talked about how there will be a new Bitcoin-like digital currency that is launching that is inspired by rapper Kanye West. The currency is going to be called “Coinye.” The digital currency will be pushing forward despite legal threats from Kanye West.
“We are in the process of preserving and protecting Mr. West’s valuable publicity and trademark rights from willful and brazen infringements,” said Kanye’s lawyer Brad Rose in an e-mail to Ars Technica. Rose is an attorney with Pryor Cashman and he represents West. Rose sent a three-page cease-and-desist e-mail to the creators of Coinye. The C&D cited “willful trademark infringement, unfair competition, cyberpiracy, and dilution.”
The creators are anonymous and are hidden behind VPNs, privacy services, and other anonymous tools.
The creators of Coinye did take into account some of the changes that were requested in the letter. For example, they altered the logo image and removed a Kanye West video from the website. They also renamed the currency from Coinye West to just Coinye.
