NTT DoCoMo is putting Tizen on hold
NTT DoCoMo has decided to put the Tizen smartphone on hold. The company is claiming that the Japanese market is not yet ready for a third mobile operating system. This is bad news for Samsung, one of the primary backers of the Linux-based Tizen OS.
“The market is not big enough to support three operating systems at this time,” stated a DoCoMo spokesman in an interview with the The WSJ.
NTT DoCoMo recently started selling the iPhone in Japan, but a DoCoMo spokesperson said that this did not influence their decision to postpone Tizen. Even though NTT DoCoMo is not going to sell the phones, they will continue development of the devices.
NTT DoCoMo is one of the Tizen Association members with SK Telecom, Samsung, Intel, LG, Vodafone, Orange and Huawei. Samsung has plans to release Tizen smartphones by August.
