Microsoft buys “Gears Of War” rights
Microsoft Corporation has acquired the rights for the Gears of War franchise created by Epic Games. Gear of War is a third-person shooter that launched in 2006.
The franchise helped the Xbox 360 gain marketshare over the PS3. Epic released a couple of sequels and a prequel to the game. Microsoft is now going to handle the development at their in-house Vancouver gaming studio called Black Tusk Studios.
Black Tusk will be assisted by Rod Fergusson, a former executive producer of the Gears franchise at Epic Games. The Gears of War franchise has been struggling as of late though. Gears of War: Judgment released last year and sold under half a million copies in the first month compared to Gears of War 3, which sold over 3 million copies in the first week.
