Microsoft may face a lawsuit over the new name OneDrive

A couple of days ago, Microsoft announced that they have rebranded their file storage service SkyDrive to OneDrive. Apparently, Microsoft renamed the service in order to settle a dispute with British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB). BSkyB claims that SkyDrive violated their own trademark.

Now Microsoft may face a dispute over the name OneDrive. One.com chief operating officer Thomas Medard Frederiksen said that his company is talking to “consulting trademark experts” about OneDrive. He said that OneDrive is a name “that is very close to One.com’s own cloud service.”

One.com’s cloud storage services had the name “Cloud Drive” for the last three years. He added that “OneDrive, from Microsoft, is a similar product – with a similar name, that will lead to confusion.” He added that it was expected Microsoft would have done more thorough research before creating the new name.
