HTC is going to redesign phones after losing a Nokia patent lawsuit
HTC is going to redesign some of their smartphones because they lost a court ruling in Germany to Nokia in regards to a wireless patent. It was ruled that HTC was infringing on Nokia’s patent #EP1579613 regarding a “method and apparatus for enabling a mobile station to adapt its revision level based on network protocol revision level.”
The filing about the changes was reported with the Taiwan Stock Exchange on Saturday. HTC said that the functionality was redundant and is no longer used in Germany.
“We are investigating modifications for our handsets to remove this redundant technology,” stated HTC.
HTC said that the redesign would cause minimal disruption to customers while an appeal is pursued. Nokia won four patent injunctions against HTC thus far in Germany. Nokia took an action against HTC for the first time in 2012 and has asserted over 50 patents globally against them.
