Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has sold over 200 million Windows 8 operating system licenses. Windows 8 was released on October 26, 2012.

“Windows 8 has surpassed 200 million licenses sold, and we continue to see momentum,” stated a Microsoft spokesperson in an interview with ZDNet. “Windows is a central part of life for more than 1.5 billion people around the world, and we are looking forward to the future.”

It took Microsoft around 15 months to sell 200 million Windows 8  licenses. It took only 12 months for Microsoft to sell 240 million licenses of Windows 7. The 200 million figure is “sell in,” which includes the sales of all laptops and PCs with Windows 8 pre-installed along with stand-alone upgrades.

Windows 8 still has a way to go to in order to catch up with predecessors Windows 7 and Windows XP.
