Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) provides $10 million grant to develop a better Siri

New Yahoo! LogoYahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) has offered a $10 million grant to Carnegie Mellon University to develop a project called InMind, which is supposed to be an assistant-style service for mobile devices. This is a five-year project that was announced last week. Researchers at the university will get access to Yahoo!’s current services like mail and news. The experimental apps will be tested by Carnegie’s students and staff members.

Yahoo! Labs head Ron Brachman came up with the idea of InMind with Tom Mitchell, the head of Carnegie’s machine-learning department. Both of them worked together on a Pentagon-funded project called CALO, which created the technology that was behind the startup that developed Siri.

“InMind will be the next generation of personal agent that will guide us in our personal lives, on our personal devices,” stated Subra Suresh president of Carnegie Mellon.
