Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) is dropping the price of Windows 8 licenses
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is reducing the cost of what they charge device manufacturers for Windows 8.1 licenses, according to Bloomberg. Devices that retail for less than $250 will see the cost drop from $50 to $15 with no restrictions on the type or size of the hardware. This may inspire manufacturers to build low-end Windows tablets.
Windows 8 has not been selling as well as Windows 7. Around 200 million Windows 8 licenses were sold ever since the operating system was released in October 2012. As a comparison, Windows 7 sold 240 million licenses within the first year.
Apparently, the 70% price reduction is part of a larger revision of Microsoft’s licensing policy. Another major change is that Microsoft would automatically boot Windows to its desktop on non-touchscreen hardware.@amitchowdhry or on Google+ at +AmitChowdhry
