Panasonic Corporation (TYO:6752) has returned to the smartphone market by launching two high-cost models that are marketed for business customers under the “Toughpad” brand.

Panasonic bailed from the smartphone market last year. But today the company said that they are aiming to make 40,000 Toughpad handsets every year. The devices will be available in Japan at a price of 130,000 yen ($1,300) before entering Europe and the U.S.

The Toughpad smartphones have a five-inch screen that are 3 cm. thick. The phones can be dropped in water and can withstand a drop of up to 3 meters. The phone also functions between a temperature range of -20 degrees to 60 degrees Celsius.

Panasonic will release two versions of the handsets that are based on the Toughpad brand. One of them will be based on Microsoft Windows Embedded 8 and the other will run on the Google Android operating system.

Panasonic has been hard by competition, especially in the consumer electronics market. Panasonic lost $15 billion over two years before restructuring the company. Panasonic is expected to profit this year.
