QUALCOMM, Inc. (QCOM) announces 64-bit Snapdragon chips
QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) has announced new 64-bit chips eight-core Snapdragon chips. These chips will be branded under the 600 series with integrated LTE network handling.
We likely will not see these mobile processors in action until Google launches a 64-bit version of Android. The 601 is pin compatible with the Snapdragon 401, which lets manufacturers swap them out without much engineering, according to TechCrunch.
The cores are ARMv8 compatible, which means that they are backward compatible for 32-bit applications. The chips will be available in the third quarter and will start shipping next year. The 600 series will also have Qualcomm’s Adreno 405 GPU, which brings DirectX 11.2 and Open GL ES3.0 to handheld devices.
