Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has announced that they are expanding Windows Azure to Asia nearly a year ago. Microsoft opened up data centers in China, Japan, and Australia to better serve customers in those markets.

Today Microsoft announced that they opened up two regions in Japan (Japan East and Japan West), which are now in general availability. Azure users in Japan can now store data locally. Microsoft invested hundreds of millions of dollars into their expansion in Asia because they believed there is an opportunity for cloud computing in that area.

Demand for Microsoft Azure is increasing at a rapid pace and so they are doubling capacity every 6-9 months. The storage usage on Azure from Microsoft’s Japanese customers increased ten times in the last 15 months. Microsoft opened an Azure region in Brazil, which should be going live in the next few months.
