Facebook and Instagram to remove gun sale listings
Facebook and its photo social network subsidiary, Instagram, is going to delete posts that are offering to buy or sell guns without a background check. It seems like gun buying and selling has increased on these social networks. Facebook and Instagram will also ban users that are under 18 from viewing gun offers posted by individuals or groups.
“We will not permit people to post offers to sell regulated items that indicate a willingness to evade or help others evade the law,” said Facebook. Facebook made the policy change after consulting with a number of individuals and organizations like New York state attorney Eric Schneiderman, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Sandy Hook Promise and Moms Demand Action. These organizations pointed out the loopholes on the Internet that allowed private sales of firearms without background checks.
Gun enthusiasts complain that this is a Second Amendment violation. Gun control is a heavily debated issue in the country so this move is quite controversial.
