Steve Jobs responded with a smiley face after a Google employee was fired
Apple’s late co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs responded with a smiley face in response to news that a Google employee was fired. What did this Google employee do?
Jobs was not happy about Google trying to poach one of Apple’s engineers, which was a violation of an alleged anti-competition agreement by the tech companies not to hire each other’s staff.
The smiley face was revealed in leaked e-mails between Jobs and Google chairman Eric Schmidt in 2007. Apparently Jobs was angry after finding out that a Google recruiter contacted one of his employees.
“I would be very pleased if your recruiting department would stop doing this,” said Jobs in an e-mail.
Schmidt went to HR and demanded to know how this happened. He was told that the person that tried to poach the Apple employee would be fired within the hour.
Schmidt told Jobs about the firing.
Jobs responded with:
” :) Steve ”
The e-mails were published by PandoDaily.
Google and Apple are defending a class action lawsuit related to the anti-hiring scheme. Apparently this scheme caused the driving down of wages.
