Zebra Technologies is acquiring the Motorola Solutions handheld unit for $3.45 billion
Zebra Technologies is a printer company that is acquiring the Motorola Solutions handheld unit for $3.45 billion. Zebra Technologies is a leader in barcode printing and RTLS technology such as printers, RFID, software and supplies. Zebra and Motorola Solutions have been partners for years so the acquisition seems like a natural fit.
Zebra will gain access to the entire Motorola Solutions handheld scanner business including customers, existing sales channels, employees, patents and intellectual property. The combined companies generated around $1 billion in 2013 sales.
Motorola Solutions’ 4,500 employees in the handheld division will join Zebra after the deal is complete. The government and public safety arm at Motorola Solutions will remain in place and is not part of this acquisition. Both Motorola Solutions and Zebra Technologies are based in Illinois. This transaction is entirely in cash and the board of directors at both companies approved of the deal. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals and should close by the end of the year.
