HTC may be interested in buying Nokia’s manufacturing plant in Chennai, India. In an interview with the Economic Times, HTC chief financial officer Chialin Chang said that he would be looking into the possibility of acquiring Nokia’s Chennai plant.

The decision will depend on how well the plant would “serve consumers.” The plant in Chennai has been a major issue for Microsoft’s $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia. The Indian government claims that the plant owes back taxes of around $500 million.

Nokia is fighting this tax levy in Indian courts, but it likely will not be resolved before the acquisition is completed. Nokia offered early retirement to some workers and may decide to either shut down the plant or sell it. If the plant is put up for sale, HTC may be the first one in line to buy it.
