Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (005930) signs wireless patent deal with InterDigital
Samsung and InterDigital have signed a patent license agreement and has dropped litigation against each other. The two companies did not release the terms of the deal, but TechCrunch estimates that the deal is worth under $500 million.
InterDigital filed a lawsuit against Samsung, Huawei, Nokia, and ZTE in the U.S. back in January 2013. InterDigital also asked the ITC for import bans on products that claimed violated its patents.
InterDigital was able to sign Apple as a licensee to cover the iPhone back in 2007. This deal is expected to be renewed this month. InterDigital also has a licensing deal with BlackBerry that was extended last year to include 4G.
“We are very happy to have resolved the licensing dispute with Samsung on mutually agreeable terms. This agreement with Samsung shows how our longstanding patent licensing framework and process can lead to effective, productive discussions and eventual resolution on fair and reasonable terms,” stated William J. Merritt, president and CEO of InterDigital in a statement.
InterDigital has around 21,000 patents in its library and employs many engineers to work on more parents.
