Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA) CEO hints at using patents for controversial reasons
Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday that he was thinking of doing something “fairly controversial” with the company patents. Musk did not elaborate, but said it is a decision he would have to “carefully explain.”
It is possible that Musk is thinking of releasing some of Tesla’s I.P. and patented technology to foster further electric car development, according to USA Today.
Musk said that Tesla Motors sold 22,500 cars last year and is on target to sell around 35,000 this year because it has a longer range per charge than competitors. Tesla Motors is also doubling the number of its high-speed Supercharger stations that it offers.
Musk said that no other automakers are taking electric cars seriously. Most other companies are doing what is minimally required as per the rules for non-polluting cars and will abandon these projects altogether when the regulations are eliminated.
Perhaps, sharing intellectual property could help those car companies expand production possibilities.
