Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ) is working on a new free and open-source operating system
Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ) CTO and head of HP Labs Martin Fink demonstrated a new data center computer that is known internally as “The Machine.”
The Machine will be powered by a new form of memory that is known as “memristors,” which does not lose data if the power turns off and is also known as “non-volatile memory.” The Machine can process loads of information quickly while using very little power.
HP has a goal of using this computer to replace the servers that are used in data centers and for the next generation of PCs. The Machine will not rely on the Windows operating system.
Fink also said that HP is working on a new free and open-source operating system with some help from universities to help research and build it.
“We want to reignite in all of our universities around the world operating system research which we think has been dormant or stagnant for decades,” said Fink at the conference.
HP’s new operating system, which is based on Linux, is called The Machine. Another operating system is being built on Android.
