Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA) and BMW held EV promotion talks amidst open patent announcement
This week, Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) and BMW held discussions about ways to improve the adoption of electric vehicles. The timing coincides with Elon Musk’s announcement about Tesla Motors opening up its patent portfolio to rivals as long as they agree not to file any kind of litigation against them.
The details on what was discussed between Tesla Motors and BMW is unknown, but Musk did say that it was to promote electric vehicles in general and to take greater advantage of the Tesla Supercharger.
Tesla Motors opened its 100th Supercharger station this month. Tesla Superchargers are used for charging up Tesla Model S vehicles so that they can travel across the U.S. without having to worry about having a sufficient charge. The Tesla Supercharger use is free to all Model S drivers. The Supercharger connection is different from the standard SAE charger, which other plugin EVs and hybrids use. Tesla sells an adapter for using the Model S with an SAE charger, but there currently is no reverse adapter.
Perhaps the talks between Tesla and BMW was around SAE chargers. Or maybe it was about BMW potentially using Tesla’s power train technology considering the Model S running gear is also used for the Toyota RAV4 electric vehicle. There is also the possibility of BMW wanting to get involved in the Gigafactory.
