Over 250 new Emojis have been announced by Unicode
Over 250 new emoji characters will be hitting smartphones and computers, according to an announcement made by the Unicode Consortium about Unicode 7.0. The new characters include a chipmunk and a dove.
There are new symbols for weather like a thermometer and a tornado. It will even have the Vulcan salute from “Star Trek.” The changes take place over time as the manufacturers implement them on their own schedule.
Emojis have been controversial in the news recently. For example, Apple issued an apology for only have two non-white faces in its Emoji implementation in iOS devices. Apple promised that there will be more options in future updates.
“Of the more than 800 emojis, the only two resembling people of color are a guy who looks vaguely Asian and another in a turban,” said a petition against Apple’s use of Emoji. “There’s a white boy, girl, man, woman, elderly man, elderly woman, blond boy, blonde girl, and, we’re pretty sure, Princess Peach. But when it comes to faces outside of yellow smileys, there’s a staggering lack of minority representation.”
Unicode version 7.0 will include the new currency symbols for the Russian ruble and Azerbaijani manat along with 23 new lesser-used and historic scripts, which extends support for written languages of China, India, Africa, and other Asian countries.
