Google Inc (GOOG) Android reportedly to arrive in cars soon
Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is expected to announce a new infotainment operating system that will bring Android apps and maps soon. This operating system will compete against Apple CarPlay. Internally, Google is calling the system Google Auto Link (GAL).
GAL is part of Google’s Open Automotive Alliance, which is a group that includes Google, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Audi, and Nvidia. The consortium was formed in January 2014 and announced that it would bring Google Android to cars by the end of the year.
Google will likely unveil the technology at its annual developer conference on June 25th-June 26th. GAL will project apps from an Android smartphone onto a car’s center display and use the car controls like a touch-screen or knob base to set up the actions.
Apple CarPlay will be integrated in BMW, Ferrari, Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai-Kia, Jaguar-Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota and Volvo. It is expected that when Google unveils its technology, more car companies will jump on-board.
