Apple Inc. (AAPL): Next iPad reportedly will come with more durable Touch ID sensors

Touch ID
When the new iPads are released this year, they will likely have high quality Touch ID sensors built-in. There is a new report suggesting that the 2014 refresh of Touch ID focuses on internal modifications that will make Apple’s Touch ID much more durable.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is expanding its 8-inch chip plant in order to produce Touch ID sensors for the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3. TSMC is planning to produce 120 million Touch ID units this year, which is a 233% year-over-year increase.

According to supply chain sources, TSMC is scaling its mass production of new Touch ID units to begin delivery to Apple by early next month.

The iPad version of Touch ID will support the additional functionality made available using iOS 8’s new SDK, which allows for third-party apps to access the fingerprint scanner for verification reasons.
